Lunch and playtime. A few years ago, New Signature Business Development Director John Revay listened to the stories of his wife Sara’s trip to Nepal. She told him how her time was spent building a house for a family in need as part of the Habitat for Humanity non-profit, and the only thing that Revay could ask when she finished her stories was, “When can we go on a build together?” Since then, Revay and his wife have been a part of five builds in different countries with Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing, both institutions started by the same person, Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda. Most recently, they completed a house in Bolivia, and before that they spent time on builds in Paraguay, Cambodia, South Africa, and Fiji. Revay and his wife use their own vacation time traveling to job sites, fully immersing themselves in the cultures of the countries and bring development to areas that are typically vastly under-developed compared to the United States and Canada. Many of the areas are lacking or are in short supply of running water and electricity. This means that most times the builds are completed without electric construction equipment; hammers, nails, shovels and the sweat of the volunteers is what drives the projects to completion. Revay said his “specialty”, a job that he’s found himself doing frequently, is churning and mixing concrete by shovel using sand, water, and cement powder. The sand delivery truck at a build site in Cambodia. Over time, Sara and John have had the opportunity to develop a community of friendship with other volunteers, as they keep in touch online and travel to spend time together. They’ve also been able to meet and connect with the families for which the homes are being built. Many of the families also volunteer during the build. The beginning of work at a site in Paraguay. Revay says that it’s not just the benefit of feeling good about giving back that keeps him engaged in the build projects. He and his wife are not beach people, so the ability to vacation for various locations, stay active and help out at the same time makes it a trifecta way in which to spend vacation time.
