New Signature recently completed extensive discovery and custom development and design work for United States Senator Harry Reid. The new site is one of the few fully responsive congressional websites.
Upon visiting the website users will see an updated logo, created exclusively for the Senate Majority Leader. Just under the primary site navigation (About, Issues & Accomplishments, etc) a custom-built display for featured content was implemented. Editors can choose to display one, two or three images depending on preference. Scroll further down, and users will see the “Recent Voting Record” tool.
New Signature engineers created the “Recent Voting Record” tool to collect data from the govtrack.us API and display Senator Reid specific information. It’s a self-contained tool, but also allows editors to define content for the Info pages in the end column, and set the link. The widget can be adjusted and programmed for other congressional members for future projects. Key features of the widget include:
- Ability to pick any member of the Senate or the House
- Ability to include a link to share the vote (currently Twitter, but other tools can be added)
- Ability to add options for filtering, for example, Energy or Agriculture
- Direct links to bills from The Library of Congress’s THOMAS data are also included
“Being able to generate data from Govtrack was incredibly helpful in the development of this tool,” New Signature Senior Engineer James Cole said. “The fact that they collate all that data together makes for quicker development and saves the client money.”
New Signature designed and developed the site in a mobile-first fashion using style tiles to initially define the look and feel of the site. The team created wireframes showing what the site would look like in a 320px display. We also developed comps that represented the visual design of the site on a desktop screen.
