When someone has a heart attack, there is a window of approximately six minutes in which a life can saved*. Driven by this statistic, New Signature has joined forces with the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) and the British Heart Foundation to implement dynamic new technological solution that will help empower the community to utilize life-saving tools in public spaces.
New Signature, the NHS and the British Heart Foundation have worked together to begin developing a technology that will map all of the public defibrillators, creating an easy-to-use tool to locate one during an emergency. This much-needed technology will help to improve the previous research, which found that even with over 100,000 defibrillators in the UK*, only 3%* of patients who have cardiac arrests in public will be treated with public-access defibrillators. This significantly reduces the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims, and with over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK*, this new partnership aims to close the gap and save more lives.
The solution, titled the National Defibrillator Database (NDD), is an Azure-based platform as a service that will integrate with dispatch systems to identify location of the defibrillators. Through the power of Microsoft’s Cloud, this mapping technology will be developed over the next calendar year, and will be piloted by West Midlands Ambulance Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service before it is rolled out across the United Kingdom. This solution will allow the BHF to see where defibrillators are located, when they are in use, and track if the battery is dying or when a unit needs maintenance.
The British Heart Foundation is the largest funder of cardiovascular research in UK, working to beat the world’s biggest killers. They fund over £100 million of research each year into all heart and circulatory diseases and the things that cause them. Heart diseases. Stroke. Vascular Dementia. Diabetes. They’re all connected, and they’re all under BHF’s microscope.
At New Signature, above anything, we are human. We work to help overcome human challenges with technology and in this case, we are proud to partner with organization with shared values to save lives and empower all of us to be human and care for one another.
