What is the RightSizing feature?
New Signature’s Cloud Management Portal (CMP) has a RightSizing feature that analyzes Virtual Machine (VM) and Azure SQL Database performance and determines which VMs and Databases are over-sized, under-sized, or right-sized. CMP provides a specific SKU recommendation for over-sized and under-sized VMs and databases. Across most of our customers who leverage the RightSizing feature, the majority of VMs and Databases are over-sized. This provides a potential way to reduce Azure usage cost by implementing the CMP RightSizing recommendation.
How do I get the RightSizing tool, and what does it cost?
The RightSizing feature within the CMP is free for customers. Resource Manager Access needs to be configured to enable CMP to obtain performance metrics from the Azure subscriptions. The configuration is done from Settings\General:
Default Azure Directory:Azure AD tenant for the subscriptions (there may be more than one Azure AD tenant. The Azure AD tenant can be obtained from the Azure Portal (https://portal.azure.com). From the Help + Support menu option (top right area), select Show Diagnostics. This will display a popup. The tenants sections has a domainName attribute. Each domainName needs to be added as a Default Azure Directory.
Azure Offer ID: This should always be MS-AZR-0017P – Windows Azure Enterprise
Azure Region: This is the country where the EA agreement was executed.
Click Configure to initiate the wizard which will grant read access to all of the Azure Subscriptions. The wizard will ask for Azure admin credentials to enable this access.
Once the configuration is complete, it will take a few hours for the performance metrics to downloadto the CMP. After the download is complete, the RightSizing service will display the analysis and recommendations:
VMs (v1 ASM and v2 ARM) and Azure SQL database recommendations are provided. The recommendations can be filtered and exported.
New Signature Managed Services can also assist with the RightSizing recommendations. We can proactively ensure that VMs and Azure SQL databases are always optimized.
